Trojena is a new luxury development in the Mountains of NEOM in Saudi Arabia, planned as a year-round tourist destination with attractions such as ski slopes, golf courses and wellness resorts. At the heart of the development is a massive, engineered mountain-top lake, confined by three dams. At one end of the lake is the Bow, which is a dam structure shaped like the bow of a ship that overhangs the valley below and houses a luxury hotel, entertainment space, and a large atrium. Light filters into the atrium through a massive under-water skylight, imparting a dynamic rippling water quality to the atmosphere.
The Trojena underwater skylight spans approximately 50 meters x 200 meters in plan and is situated 2.1 meters below the projected water level of the lake. The skylight is composed of 10-meter x 4.8-meter x 35cm thick acrylic panels, supported on the long sides by precast elements and primary steel structure and on the short sides by secondary steel elements. The skylight system design is carefully detailed with redundant water-seal lines of defence and a robust leak detection system.
BUROMILAN FAÇADE collaborated with WeBuild to develop the skylight system design during the Construction Documents phase, including extensive outreach with acrylic suppliers, preliminary engineering and element sizing, detailed 3D models of all skylight components and installation sequencing to ensure constructable engineered solutions were developed.
